Proper observance of etiquette is as much a part of your training as is learning techniques. It also ensures a safe and pleasant training environment for all. Yokohama AikiDojo students are expected to:

  1. Wear a white judo-type keikogi after the first month of practice.
  2. Keep their training uniform clean, in good shape, and free of odors.
  3. When entering or leaving the training hall and/or practice area, bow in the direction of the shomen (where the picture of the founder is).
  4. Practice barefoot on the mat.
  5. Be on time for class. If late, sit quietly in seiza on the edge of the mat until the instructor grants permission to join practice.
  6. Bow down before exiting the mat.
  7. Take breaks and rehydrate as needed, especially in summer.
  8. Only sit in seiza or agura (cross-legged).
  9. Remove watches, rings and other jewelry before practice.
  10. Keep finger and toe nails short.
  11. Keep the talking to a minimum during class.
  12. Carry out the directives of the instructor promptly.
  13. Perform only the movements as demonstrated by the instructors.
  14. Not engage in rough-housing or needless contests of strength during class.
  15. Preserve common-sense standards of decency, inclusiveness, and respect towards all, and at all times.
  16. Make sure that the training fee has been paid at reception and a practice coupon has been obtained, whether using a single class coupon or a 4-classes coupon..
  17. Use the changing rooms to change clothes.
  18. Purchase their own sets of weapons (bokken and jo) once they intend to keep practicing.

The Yokohama AikiDojo instructors reserve the right to deny access to the training area if in spite of several reminders, a member continues failing to meet one or several of the previously stated expectations.
